Stomach cancer is a malignant cancer of the stomach lining. This cancer is also called also called gastric cancer/carcinoma, which typically occurs only in older people and accounts for approximately five percent of all cancers. Although the prognosis of stomach cancer is rather unfavorable, in recent decades, the morbidity and deaths from stomach cancer continuously decreases.
Diseases which develop the stomach cancer, include stomach ulcer, chronic gastritis and other chronic gastric mucosa diseases, stomach polyps. Unhealthy diet life also promotes a stomach cancer, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Helicobacter pylori also plays a very important role in the development of stomach cancer. It is an important bacterium in the stomach wall and closely related to gastritis, gastric ulcer.
Symptoms, which may indicate stomach cancer, are new occurrences of food intolerances, distaste for meat, loss of appetite and a pressure sensation in the upper abdomen. When the stomach cancer spreads to the blood vessels that can lead to bleeding in the stomach and subsequently to coffee grounds-like vomiting or black stools.
If symptoms persist, stomach problems should be investigated by a gastroscopy to exclude the possibility that stomach cancer is behind it. If the suspected stomach cancer is confirmed, doctor will make further tests to determine the stage of disease.
